ChatGPT simulates emotion but has no humanity at all

According to the company OpenAI, which owns the chatbot ChatGPT, the life of the California teenager Adam Raine did. After the Raine family filed a lawsuit against the company this summer, saying that their son used ChatGPT as a “suicide coach”, OpenAI responded this week to say that it was not liable for Adam’s death and that he had “misused” the product.

Chat logs provided in the lawsuit from Adam’s parents give awful details about the time leading up to his death by suicide on 11 April 2025, at the age of just 16. He had reportedly engaged in months of conversation with the chatbot about his plans.

OpenAI have responded to the suit by saying that Adam “misused” the chatbot. “To the extent that any ‘cause’ can be attributed to this tragic event”, the statement reads, Raine’s “injuries and harm were caused or contributed to, directly and proximately, in whole or in part, by [his] misuse, unauthorised use, unintended use, unforeseeable use, and/or improper use of ChatGPT”.
