Tributes to community stalwart Bill

A POPULAR Plymouth businessman and the organiser of Plymouth's first marathon has died.

Bill White, born as William James Short, moved to Plymouth as a child and fell in love with the city. The dad-of-five achieved a lot throughout his time in Plymouth, including raising money for charities, helping with Miss Plymouth and running his garage on Elm Road.

Bill was born in Tywardreath, a small village on the south coast of Cornwall, on July 1 1942. His daughter, Sam Remmer, has shared some memorable highlights from his life.

In July 1959, Bill was awarded the Queens Scout Honour, the first of two city boys to receive the prestigious honour. In the 70s and 80s, Bill was a very active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as owning and running White's Auto Centre in Elm Road.
