Naval base to get £4bn investment

INJECTION 'VITAL FOR NATIONAL SECURITY'

THE Government is to invest £4bn into Plymouth’s naval base. The Treasury this week said the cash injection was critical for national security.

It said that in order to secure the UK as a leader in both civil and defence nuclear, the Government will invest £4bn during the next decade into the Devonport facility and continue the long-term investment in the Defence Nuclear Enterprise and its industrial base. It said “This is critical for our national security while also being a significant generator of economic opportunities, jobs and growth across the entire country.”

Further investments in the defence nuclear sector include more than £6bn to enable a transformation in the capacity, capability and productivity of the UK’s submarine industrial base, including at BAE Systems in Barrow and Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby.
