KINGSTON Lacy, just outside Wimborne in Dorset, offers more than gardens and a welcoming café. Step inside the house to discover an astonishing art collection, one of the most important in the National Trust, with works by Lely, Titian, Rubens, and Velazquez.

For over 300 years, Kingston Lacy was home to the Bankes family. In the 1830s and 1840s the house was refashioned to echo a Venetian palace. The staircase was rebuilt in marble, the exterior refaced with local Chilmark stone, and skilled craftsmen were commissioned to create decorative elements, ranging from larger-than-life bronze statues to intricately carved doors and shutters.
