Domestic football is facing a new threat
The Herald
|March 07, 2025
LEAGUE chiefs “fear for the future” of domestic football in some countries after FIFA revealed clubs participating in its Club World Cup this summer would share an eye-watering one billion-dollar prize pot, writes Jamie Gardner.
-
The division of that sum, which equates to £776 million, between participation and performance is understood to be broadly equal, but some estimates suggest a club could earn as much from winning the FIFA event as they could from Champions League victory, but having played only seven matches instead of at least 15.
