Council: ‘no plans’ for blanket 20mph zone

THERE are no plans to bring in a “blanket” 20mph speed limit in Plymouth, the council has stressed.

The authority reacted to a petition which has been signed by more than 1,500 people opposing 20mph zones in the city.

The petition, set up by city plumber Peter Simmons on the Change.org website and titled “say no to 20mph zones all over Plymouth” has gathered 1,548 names, at the time of writing, since February, with what appears to be a recent spike in numbers.

The petition begs Plymouth City Council to “urgently reconsider and halt the proposed implementation of 20mph speed zones across the city”.

It said there are concerns about “the democratic process’, a possible negative impact on the economy, “environmental consequences” and “insufficient justification” for “widespread” speed restrictions.
