City battons down as Storm Bram hits

PLYMOUTH braced itself for the onslaught of Storm Bram yesterday - but managed to escape relatively unscathed.

However, many areas across the Devon and Cornwall region did not fare so well, with flooding, strong winds, and disruption to travel, with trains delayed, homes without power, and a partial bridge closure.

Over 2,000 properties were without power in the South West - including 971 in Devon.

And on the A38 Tamar Bridge, one lane was closed due to strong winds in the afternoon. There was heavy traffic as a result of the bottleneck.

On the railways, disruption was expected until 4.15pm on the line towards Plymouth, due to flooding at Ivybridge.

Plymouth itself was covered by two separate Met Office weather warnings predicting travel delays, power cuts and flooding.
