A coalition of conservation and design charities yesterday won a fierce bidding battle to buy a threatened modernist house in the Scottish Borders.

- Severin Carrell

Headed by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), the group paid in the region of £336,000 for the Bernat Klein Studio near Selkirk, which has been derelict for more than 20 years.

The building, regarded as a jewel of late modernist British architecture, was designed in 1972 by Peter Womersley, a highly regarded local architect. It was created for Bernat Klein, a textiles designer whose clients included Coco Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent.
