RTÉ asks for discussion over Israel's inclusion in Eurovision

Ireland's public broadcaster has asked the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for a discussion about Israel's inclusion in the Eurovision song contest, after 72 former contestants called for the Israeli broadcaster Kan to be banned from next week's event in the Swiss city of Basel.
The director general of RTÉ in Ireland, Kevin Bakhurst, said in a statement on Wednesday that he was "appalled by the ongoing events in the Middle East and by the horrific impact on civilians in Gaza, and the fate of Israeli hostages". By asking for a discussion over Israel's inclusion in Eurovision, Bakhurst said, he was mindful "of the need to maintain RTÉ's objectivity in covering the war in Gaza", as well as "severe political pressure" on Kan, Israel's public service broadcaster, from the Israeli government.
Israel has been part of the world's largest live music event since 1973, when it became the first participant not to be located in Europe.
