Richardson beaten but promises to 'drown my sorrows and eat cake'

As the lights came on for boxing in the unfamiliar surroundings of Roland Garros, they went out on Team GB's involvement in this sport at the Paris Olympics. Lewis Richardson will have to settle for bronze in the 71kg men's category after losing on a split decision against the Mexican Marco Verde.

After a strong counterattacking display especially in rounds two and three, Richardson can consider himself unfortunate. Three judges out of the five had awarded round one to the Mexican. In the second, Richardson turned the tables to win 4-1. Verde's response was even more vehement in the eyes of the judges, who afforded him a 5-0 clean sweep, all by 10-9.

Richardson did not mask his disappointment. "It is devastating. It's raw," he said. "I stepped out of the ring moments ago, emotions are very high. Obviously disappointed to miss out on a final and box for a gold. Initial disappointment but I hope to look back and be extremely proud of what I've achieved. I will go back to the village and drown my sorrows.
