Namibia criticised over response to wildfires in national park
The Guardian
|September 30, 2025
Wildfires that have raged through one of Africa's largest national parks are under control, Namibia's government has said, despite criticism of its response to the situation.
Fire broke out in Etosha national park, which is in the north of the arid desert nation, on 22 September. The government blamed charcoal production next to the park.
Etosha has 114 mammal species, including the critically endangered black rhino.
On Saturday, the government said it had sent 49 soldiers to fight the fires, with a further 500 on Sunday. It said more than 775,000 hectares inside the park, about a third of its area, had been burned and another 171,000 outside it.
