Judge blocks president's order to send national guard to Oregon

An activist is taken into custody after being detained during the demonstration at the Oregon base of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

The ruling came after California's governor, Gavin Newsom, announced he would sue the US president over his planned transfer of troops from his state to Oregon.

Illinois also announced yesterday it was suing on behalf of the state and the city of Chicago after the president ordered national guard troops to deploy in the state against its governor's wishes.

On Saturday, the federal judge - Karin Immergut - had blocked the administration from deploying Oregon's own national guard troops to the state's largest city, Portland.

Her ruling said there was no evidence that recent protests necessitated the presence of national guard troops, no matter where they came from. Immergut asked a Trump administration lawyer during a hearing on Sunday night: "How could bringing in federalised national guard from California not be in direct contravention of the [decision] I issued yesterday?"
