The Guardian Weekly team's small-screen picks of the year, from nature's wonder to a trip to 1970s Belfast

The final season of Jack Rooke's coming out dramedy Big Boys (Channel 4/Netflix/Apple) was as funny and filthy as its two predecessors.

But its concluding episodes took an emotionally jolting turn as the focus switched from Dylan Llewellyn's Jack to his best friend, Danny. Profoundly moving performances by Jon Pointing as Danny and Katy Wix as student union rep Jules mean this series has stayed with me since it aired in February.

A mystery of the week series seems like such a retro concept, but the second season of Rian Johnson and Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face (Peacock/Sky/Now/Stan) was fresh, smart and hilarious. Alongside Lyonne as human lie detector Charlie Cale, the episodes featured some stellar cameos - including Steve Buscemi, Rhea Perlman and Awkwafina - but the standout has to be Cynthia Erivo's astonishing turn as a set of quintuplets. Series two of comedy Mo (Netflix) chronicles the tribulations of lead character Mo Najjar as he navigates the cruel and impenetrable US immigration system. In a desperate bid to better his life, Mo, a stateless Palestinian refugee, takes a big risk at the end of series one, and this series finds him dealing with the impossible fallout. The plot is heavy and couldn't be more poignant in today's world but the resilience and spirit of Mo brings lightness to the dark, and humour is never far away.

Hamza's Hidden Wild Isles (BBC/Apple) provides a compelling reminder of what we all stand to gain by spending time outdoors. The documentary series, which is filmed across the UK and devotes as much time to cities and suburbs as to moorlands and coastlines, proves that the wonder of nature really is all around us. Presenter Hamza Yassin's passion and respect for wildlife is utterly infectious and cements him as a worthy future successor to David Attenborough. Emily Elnusairi, deputy editor
