Thug left police officer with 7cm gash to his head

A MAN left a police officer with short-term memory loss after punching him to the ground as he attempted to evade an arrest.

Harley Rutley punched the officer in the face after being questioned about bottles of nitrous oxide being found near the car he was in.

The 20-year-old assaulted the officer after a short chase on Majuba Road in Redcar on October 11.

The officer was left with a gash in the back of his head and has no recollection of the attack.

On Wednesday, Rutley, of Wand Hill, Boosbeck, appeared at Teesside Crown Court via link from HMP Holme House to be sentenced for grievous bodily harm. He had previously pleaded guilty to the offence.
