At one time Steve Gibson had a reputation for hanging on to sliding managers for too long in the early part of his tenure. However, things are different these days. Since Spanish boss Aitor Karanka was dismissed eight years ago, no less than six Boro managers have come and gone rather quickly.

It's a clear indication that Gibson adheres to the modern trend of weighing up new incumbents very quickly and knowing when the time is right to open or shut the door. We were wondering whether Michael Carrick would be given the opportunity to prove himself over one more season, but Gibson's patience has run out - just as it has done in recent years with all of his managers.
