CCTV cameras installed in Redcar and Cleveland led directly to over 100 arrests in the past 12 months.

Images captured by the equipment led directly to 102 arrests in 2024/25, while CCTV also indirectly helped with a further 199 arrests by police, a council report said.

The local authority previously completely replaced its CCTV system and cameras, an existing 357 in total, with the aid of a Government 'levelling up' grant award.

Some councillors had expressed frustration over the "analogue" nature of the previous system and its inability to record quality footage to assist with crime investigations.

Of the 357, 240 replacement cameras were added to buildings this year with 117 installed in public places. Meanwhile, a further 98 new cameras were added to the system with the funds, mostly on council buildings including Kirkleatham Museum and various council depots.

The council also has mounted cameras on two enforcement vehicles, refuse trucks and vehicles used for home to school transport.
