COUNCILLOR Jack Banks is the new chair of Middlesbrough Council.

The 31-year-old Labour councillor, elected as one of three councillors in the Brambles and Thorntree ward in 2023, believed that he had potentially become the youngest ever chair of the council.

When he is not fulfilling his council duties, Cllr Banks is the head of PE at Trinity secondary school, having been a teacher for the last 10 years.

At the annual meeting of the council, held on Wednesday, May 21, Cllr Banks was confirmed as the new chair; he was the only councillor nominated for the position.
