GO WILD WITH ERIC PAYLOR

ONE of the most exotic birds you are likely to spot in the Teesside region is the magnificent spoonbill.

This fine picture of Saltholme's spoonbill was taken by Carolyn Farry
(Carolyn Farry)
This large wading bird is traditionally a summer visitor, but at least one individual has decided to spend the whole winter with us.
It has been a regular sight at RSPB Saltholme in all areas of the reserve, though mainly the Allotment Pool where it probably roosts.
It's not unusual to see overwintering spoonbills here in recent years, and they are quite a spectacular sight with their pure white plumage and amazing bill which earns them their name. They sweep the bill from side to side in shallow water feeding on insects and their larvae.
