Asylum detention centre's back open
The Gazette
|December 06, 2025
THE Government has reopened the Camps-field immigration detention facility near Oxford as part of plans to boost spaces to house asylum seekers and foreign offenders while they wait to be deported.
-
It comes as Sir Keir Starmer’s Government is seeking to tackle the backlog of asylum cases and speed up removals.
Campsfield has an additional 160 beds after the first phase of refurbishment, with plans for that to later rise to 400.
The site opened on December 1, with the first detainees arriving there on December 3.
The Campsfield site is one of two being brought back into operation.
The Government aims to provide 1,000 more detention spaces at the Campsfield centre and the Haslar centre in Gosport, Hampshire.
