Cost of living crisis blamed on rising obesity risk in kids

New figures show the number of overweight or obese primary one pupils in Dumfries and Galloway is on the rise.

Rates have fluctuated in recent years with the highest number of cases standing at 28.2 per cent in 2021/22 and then falling to 25.9 per cent in 2022/23 and 23 per cent in 2023/24.

However, latest figures, show an increase to 26.9 per cent.

Rising food prices and transport costs are said to be part of the problem — making it difficult for many families to consistently access affordable, nutritious food options.
