IMPEACHMENT NOISE
-
As impeachment complaints shake the country's highest offices, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has expressed concern that the unfolding political crisis could tarnish the Philippines' global reputation and undermine economic confidence.
Baricuatro said that while impeachment is a democratic process, the timing and intensity risk projecting an image of political instability. Her remarks come as both President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte face separate impeachment complaints.
“As part of the executive branch, I really don’t like the idea of impeaching anybody at all, even dismissing officials,” Baricuatro said in an interview.
“Probably that’s part of democratic practice, but nevertheless I don’t like anyone being impeached, either the President or the Vice President,” she added.
According to the governor, the political noise surrounding the impeachment cases could have economic repercussions.
“It’s making our economy and political situation unstable. Mura’g maka-destabilize siya sa government, kanang ingon ana bitaw nga impeachment,” she said.
Baricuatro stressed that the country should instead focus on recovery and development, warning that prolonged political battles could distract from governance and delay programs meant to spur growth.
