AFTER RETIREMENT

For Archbishop Jose Palma, Cebu has always been more than an assignment — it has become a heartfelt belonging. As he looks ahead to retirement, he has declared he will remain in the city he now calls home.

Appointed in 2010, Palma arrived at a moment of spiritual triumph: the announcement that Pedro Calungsod, the young Visayan martyr beatified in 2000, would be canonized.

Two decades later, it is not just Calungsod’s sainthood that marks Palma’s journey in Cebu, but a quiet sanctity he himself found in the community that embraced him.

“I am happily stranded in Cebu,” he said with a grin, embracing both the irony and the joy of a ministry that never truly paused — even during his conferment with the Order of Rajah Humabon by the Cebu City government.
