No more Capitol scholarship for studes in private schools?

Cebuano college students enrolled in private universities in Cebu province will soon no longer be eligible to apply for the Capitol’s college scholarship program, following a proposed amendment to the existing ordinance governing the Cebu Province Grants Intended for Tertiary Students (CP-GIFTS).

This, as 2nd District Board Member Raymond Joseph D. Calderon, chairman of the Committee on Education of the 17th Sangguniang Panlalawigan, introduced a proposed ordinance amending Sections 4 and 6 of Ordinance No. 2022-01.

The measure was approved on first reading during the provincial board’s regular session held on July 14, 2025.

The amendment seeks to limit the scope of the CP-GIFTS ordinance, originally enacted in 2020, by removing eligibility for students enrolled in private higher education institutions and retaining it only for students studying in state universities and colleges (SUCs).
