As reported in this newspaper, over 200 individuals engaged in illegal sand and gravel extraction along the Hinulawan River in Toledo City have been ordered by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) to cease operations after a recent inspection revealed widespread environmental damage caused by unregulated quarrying.

PENRO head Rodel Bontuyan said an inspection by Governor Pamela Baricuatro of the site revealed hundreds of individuals manually extracting sand and gravel along various sections of the Hinulawan River, spanning barangays Dumlog, Sangi, Ilihan, Canlumampao, Magdugo, and Cambang-ug.

"Daghan g'yud og balas diha. Ang uban naay permit, pero kadaghanan, manual ayag-ayag," Bontuyan explained.

Because many of them are doing so indiscriminately, damage is being done to the river.

"Ang problema, bisan asa nalang mo-extract ang uban. Mao na'ng guba g'yud ang sapa," he added.
