ICC rejects Duterte's bid to limit victim verification

The International Criminal Court (ICC) pre-trial chamber has denied former president Rodrigo Duterte's legal team's request to limit the process of verifying victims in the court's investigation into his controversial war on drugs.

In a 20-page order issued on April 17, the pre-trial chamber approved the registry's proposed list of identification documents that may be used to verify the identities of victims seeking to participate in the proceedings.

According to the chamber, the registry provided sufficient detail on each proposed document including the issuing authority and sample formats demonstrating their reliability for identity verification.

"This information, together with the procedure for admission of victims to participate in the proceedings adopted above, already ensures the reliability of the identity verification process and significantly reduces the risk of fraud," the chamber stated in its order.
