DPWH chief Bonoan rejects resignation calls

Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan on Saturday, August 30, dismissed calls for his resignation over alleged anomalous flood control projects.

He insisted that stepping down would not solve the problem but only sidestep responsibility.

“Meron nga nananawagan sa akin na ako po raw ay mag-leave o kaya po ay mag-resign dahil po sa isyung ito. 'Yan po sana ang madaling gawin, magresign o talikuran ko ang problema,” Bonoan said in a video message. (Some have been calling on me to take a leave or resign because of this issue. That would have been the easy thing to do, to resign or turn my back on the problem.)

“Pero hindi po ang pag-alis o pag-iwas ng responsibilidad ang tamang paraan ng paghahanap ng solusyon,” he added. (But leaving or avoiding responsibility is not the proper way to find a solution.)

The embattled secretary said that while he accepts accountability, he will not allow corruption to persist under his watch.
