Councilor urges DPWH to repair collapsed flood control structure

Mandaue City Councilor Carlo Fortuna urged the Cebu 6th District Engineering Office (DEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to implement corrective measures on the collapsed flood control structure in Barangay Paknaan, suggesting that the PVC sheet piles be reinforced with steel.

In an interview yesterday, Fortuna suggested that the agency replace the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheet piles with steel for stronger and longer protection.

Fortuna and Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano last week personally inspected the site in Barangay Paknaan where part of the Level 1 flood-control structure collapsed. According to him, the failure was caused by water buildup behind the structure, which was built using PVC sheet piles, based on the project contract specs.

Fortuna noted that, aside from the collapsed portion, another downstream section has started to tilt and shows signs of potential disintegration.

Following their inspection, the mayor and the councilor called DPWH officials yesterday morning to discuss the situation. Fortuna said the agency acknowledged the need for repairs and assured them that funds were available to restore the damaged portion.
