Comelec renews push to amend party-list law

Following the official proclamation of the winning party-list groups, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) renewed its call for a comprehensive review and amendment of the Party-list Law.

“Kung tutuusin, ‘yan ang aming patuloy na panawagan, na mapag-isipan na sana pagkakaroon ng pagbabago sa party-list law,” said Comelec Chairman George Garcia in a press conference.

Garcia stressed the need for new legislation to resolve recurring issues, including the proper computation for the allocation of seats and concerns that some party-list groups no longer represent marginalized and underrepresented sectors.

“Sa bandang huli, batas kasi dapat ‘yan e. Limitado ang pwede naming gawin,” he explained.

Garcia also said that in future elections, the Comelec will prohibit party-list groups from using names inspired by popular television shows or government assistance programs.
