Baricuatro inspects quarry operations in Toledo rivers

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro personally visited the Hinulawan River in Toledo City on Friday, October 24, for an unannounced inspection of quarry operations, following complaints raised by residents during a peaceful protest last week.
The surprise visit came nine days after several Toledo residents trooped to the Capitol to submit a petition urging the provincial government to address the environmental and safety impacts of quarrying in their communities.
In their petition, the Sapangdaku River Community Stakeholders Association, Inc. (SARICOSA) and the Lamintak Norte Farmer-Beneficiaries Association (LANFABA) expressed concern that continuous quarrying has caused severe environmental degradation.
They said the river has widened and deepened over time, posing serious risks to residents especially students who cross it daily in the absence of a bridge.
