The Commission on Elections Comelec) has approved the Cebu City government’s petition seeking exemption from the election ban on disbursements for social services programs, projects, and dole-outs amounting to at least P310.21 million.

The disbursement, which underwent thorough discussion, scrutiny, and amendments by the Cebu City Council, required Comelec's approval due to the prohibition on releasing public funds during the election period, particularly once the campaign period begins.

In a document sent to the media, it was stated that Comelec issued the notice of approval on March 18, 2025.

Cebu City Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia submitted the petition on March 10, 2025.

With the approval granted, the funds may now be utilized from March 28, 2025, to May 12, 2025.

Among those approved was the P5 million worth of financial assistance to individuals facing emergencies under the Aid to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS). It was justified that its exemption is necessary to address unforeseen emergencies, such as medical expenses, death, loss of livelihood, and other crises.

The P2 million SelfEmployment Assistance (SEAP) was also approved.
