A TALE OF ART, CULTURE AND FRIENDSHIP

At Zapeto Elementary School, the classrooms buzzed with excitement.

Posters of bright suns, woven fabrics, and painted jars (some contained paper cranes or crane eggs) decorated the walls. Their teacher had just announced, “Class, we will be creating our own version of the Hiyas at Likha exhibit. Each of you will share a piece of Filipino art or craft to show how colorful our culture is.”

“Teacher, what is Hiyas and Likha?” Stacey asked.

“Because Hiyas means gem or jewel and Likha means to create, Hiyas at Likha can be taken as “Precious Creations” or “Gems of Creativity.” Exhibits or events with this title often highlight Filipino art, crafts, and talents as treasures worth sharing with the world”, Teacher Kristina explained.
