HAL, Russia deal to build civil jets
The Free Press Journal

India and Russia have firmed up a landmark collaboration to jointly produce a twin-engine, narrow-body passenger aircraft — the SJ-100 — for short-haul routes, marking a milestone in India’s civil aviation journey.
-
The agreement between state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia's Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) was inked in Moscow on Monday, signalling a new phase in the two nations’ growing strategic partnership.
This will be the first time India manufactures a complete passenger aircraft, a feat last achieved over three decades ago with the AVRO HS-748 programme that ended in 1988. The SJ-100, already in operation with more than 16 international airlines, has over 200 aircraft in service worldwide. It can seat upto 103 passengers.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the development as a “major stride towards Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance)” in civil aviation.
