Arlekar challenges Supreme Court

Governor Rajendra Arlekar has publicly questioned the Supreme Court's interp retation of the law governing university vice chancellor appointments, asserting that statutory authority rests with the chancellor and not with any other body.

Speaking at a public event, the Governor said the legal position was unambiguous under the University Grants Commission framework and expressed surprise at how courts have interpreted similar provisions differently in comparable cases.

Arlekar made the remarks while presenting the V R Krishna Iyer Award to former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and former Kerala Governor P Sathasivam, a setting that lent added weight to his comments amid an ongoing debate over the governance of universities in the state.
