9,000 RPM, 10 milliseconds, and one unbeatable machine

For decades, table tennis has served as the ultimate proving ground for the limits of machine reflexes.
While computers have long since conquered the abstract board games of Chess and Go, the physical world—with its messy air currents, invisible friction, and the sheer velocity of a spinning ball— remained a sanctuary for human intuition. That sanctuary was breached this week.
In a landmark study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers at Sony AI unveiled Ace, an autonomous robotic system that has successfully defeated “elite” human players in competitive matches. The achievement is being hailed by roboticists as a “ChatGPT moment” for physical machines, marking the first time an Al has reached expertlevel performance in a highspeed, adversarial sport.
To understand the magnitude of Ace’s performance, one must look at the geometry of the game. In professional table tennis, the ball is a 2.7-gram hollow sphere that acts more like an aircraft than a projectile. While a tennis ball might travel faster in absolute terms — reaching 163.7 mph — it covers a vast distance. A table tennis smash, peaking around 70 to 90 mph, covers its nine-foot path in roughly 0.1 seconds.
By comparison, a professional cricket bowler’s delivery at 90 mph or an ice hockey puck at 100 mph allows the human brain a luxury of time that table tennis denies.
