Notice issued in response to a complaint of April 2023 by the Govandi Citizens' Welfare Forum, seeking NHRC's intervention

- Manoj Ramakrishnan

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the BMC chief, assistant municipal commissioner (M-East ward), district collector and the Commissioner of Police (CP), saying that the civic body is violating human rights by permitting manual scavengers to clean sewage drains with bare hands, risking their health and lives.

The agencies have been asked to prepare a list of victims of manual scavenging in the ward and reply to the notice by October 24.

The notice was issued earlier this week in response to a complaint in April 2023 by the Govandi Citizens' Welfare Forum, seeking the commission's intervention in stopping blatant violation of laws forbidding manual scavenging, including the Prohibition of Employment of Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.

°No objection to Wangchuk altering plea’

The Union Government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it has no objection to Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk sharing the notes he has prepared to challenge his detention with his wife, Dr Gitanjali Angmo. Taking note of this submission, the Court adjourned the petition filed by Angmo challenging Wangchuk’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) to October 29, after her lawyer, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, sought permission to amend the petition to include additional grounds and reliefs.
