MHADA’s historic redevelopment of GTB Nagar, Sion Koliwada
-
Mumbai’s bustling lanes often hide stories of resilience and longing, and few places capture this as poignantly as Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar (GTB Nagar), Sion Koliwada.
For the Sindhi refugee families who migrated to India after Partition, GTB Nagar became not just a settlement but a symbol of survival. In 1958, 25 buildings were constructed here to provide them with shelter in a new homeland. For decades, these buildings stood as a reminder of both displacement and community strength.
But in 2020, destiny once again tested them. Declared dangerous by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation under the Cl category, the buildings had to be demolished, forcing nearly 1,200 families to scatter and rebuild their lives elsewhere. For many residents, the moment was described as a “second Partition’, a painful reminder of the loss they had once endured in 1947.
A promise renewed
