City's famous mandals mark Ganeshotsav with grand themes

As Ganeshotsav enters full swing, Pune's most famous mandals are drawing massive crowds with elaborate decorations, devotional themes and years of tradition behind them.

The Kasba Peth Ganapati, the first manacha Ganapati of Pune, is celebrating its 133rd year. The mandal is paying homage to Ballaleshwar Ganapati of Pali, one of the Ashtavinayak shrines, with a traditional Maratha wada-style decoration.

The Bhau Rangari Ganapati Mandal Trust, in its 132nd year, has themed its pandal as a peacock palace. Bright colours and devotional music, including abhangs and kirtans, accompany the idol placed on the right side of the mandap.
