Sacked Bengal teachers start indefinite gherao

Hundreds of teachers and non-teaching staff - among the 26,000 who lost their jobs following the termination of their services by a Supreme Court judgment - started an indefinite gherao of the West Bengal Staff Service Commission office after the WBSSC refused to publish a list of "tainted" and "untainted" candidates.
They resolved to continue with their gherao till the Education Minister and the SSC chairman resigned owning responsibility.
The Acharya Sadan office of the WBSSC turned into a fortress with a massive deployment of police forces armed with sticks and tear gas, and a three-layer barricade in front of the gate. The demonstrators blocked both the gates of the building with officials and the Chairman stuck inside.
They also refused to allow food delivery personnel to carry food into the building.
