Portraits of 'Women of Urban India' come alive
The Daily Guardian
|March 11, 2025
Friends, neighbour, cousins and even herself — Muses run aplenty for Indo-French contemporary visual artist Olympe Ramakrishna, whose 12-portrait magnificent art installation on Indian women is on display from March 8, 2025 at the Alliance Francaise de Delhi. Titled "Women of Urban India", her striking works seek to capture the essence of urban Indian women and tell their stories of adaptation in an ever-evolving world.
Olympe grew up in France and is now settled in Bengaluru, India. This duality of worlds is also reflected in her works — as her artistic practice is deeply shaped by both the academic portraiture traditions of Europe as well as India's miniatures and Company paintings.
Twelve striking portraits are on display, showcasing to Indian viewers the artist used earthy colors with solid backdrops and her selection of materials, which include dupion silk sarees suspended from the ceiling and represent resilience and fluidity.
