MAMATA BANERJEE BLAMES SIR ROLL REVISION FOR 28 DEATHS IN WEST BENGAL

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday publicly blamed the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls for the deaths of at least 28 people across the State, singling out the process as an “inhuman” burden imposed on field-level staff ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The political row erupted after the tragic death of a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in Jalpaiguri’s Mal block. The deceased, Shanti Muni Ekka, was an anganwadi worker and member of a tribal community. Her body was found hanging in the courtyard of her home on Wednesday morning, barely weeks after a similar tragedy in East Burdwan district.
Family members allege suicide, linking it directly to the insurmountable work stress caused by the SIR exercise.
