KOTA DORIYA: TIMELESS FABRIC LEGACY UNFOLDED

Kota Doriya Fabric Photo

Originating from the town of Kota in Rajasthan, this lightweight yet durable fabric has been cherished for its elegance, simplicity, and versatility. Known for its distinctive square check patterns, fine texture, and airy feel, Kota Doriya continues to be a symbol of Rajasthani craftsmanship and timeless fashion, appreciated both in India and across the globe.

The origins of Kota Doriya date back to the 17th century when skilled weavers settled in Kota after migrating from neighboring regions. Initially, the fabric was crafted primarily for local use among the royal families and affluent households. Over time, it gained popularity for its comfort in Rajasthan's hot and arid climate. The fabric’s lightweight nature and soft texture made it ideal for sarees, dupattas, and dress materials, combining functionality with artistry.

Kota Doriya weaving evolved under the patronage of local rulers who encouraged artisans to experiment with designs and patterns. The traditional square-check motifs, also called “chhati,” became a hallmark of Kota Doriya. The unique weaving technique, which involves a blend of cotton warp and silk weft threads, gives the fabric its characteristic transparency and strength, making it distinct from other handloom fabrics of India.
