J'khand orders probe as HIV-infected blood given to children

In a deeply distressing case of medical negligence, five children suffering from thalassemia contracted HIV after being administered infected blood during transfusions at a hospital in Jharkhand's Chaibasa.

The state government has ordered a high-level probe and suspended multiple health officials.

Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari confirmed that the issue came to light two days ago, calling it an “extremely serious matter.”

“A preliminary confirmation of HIV infection was found in one thalassemia-affected child during the inquiry,” Ansari said on social media platform X.

He added that the Civil Surgeon of Chaibasa, the doctor in charge of the HIV unit at Sadar Hospital, and the concerned technician have been suspended with immediate effect.
