Haryana struggles to break the chains of child marriage

Haryana, a state that has rapidly modernized with urban development and agricultural advancements, continues to face a haunting paradox—its ongoing struggle with child marriage.

Despite being outlawed and condemned in policy, the practice remains entrenched in many parts of the state, particularly in rural and economically vulnerable areas.

As per the data from the Women and Child Development Department from April 2024 to February 2025 alone, Haryana recorded 335 complaints related to child marriages. Shockingly, 115 actual incidents were confirmed during this period. Panipat emerged as the worst-affected district, reporting 40 such cases, followed by Kaithal (21), Fatehabad (19), and Sirsa (15). Karnal led in complaints, with 65 cases flagged, followed by Panipat (39), Nuh (26), Sirsa (23), and Palwal and Fatehabad with 19 each.

These troubling numbers reflect more than just administrative lapses—they highlight a social mindset that prioritizes control over young girls' futures rather than their freedom. While over 200 child marriages were prevented through timely counseling interventions, many more escape the official radar.
