Calcutta HC seeks report on Bengali workers' detention

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary to appoint a nodal officer to get in touch with the authorities in Odisha and take necessary steps to ensure the release of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from the State who were detained there.
Citing news reports, State senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee said 200 Bengali speakers from West Bengal and some in Assam were arrested solely for their mother tongue.
On Thursday, a Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Mitra of the Calcutta High Court also directed the West Bengal Government to act immediately and submit a report to the court in this regard on Monday.
