Bombs thrown in celebration of TMC victory kill girl

Bombs thrown during a Trinamool Congress rally celebrating the victory of the party's candidate in the Kaliganj Assembly by-elections claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl on Monday afternoon.

The explosion occurred in Barochandgar, under Kaliganj police station limits as Trinamool Congress workers celebrated the bypoll victory of their candidate, Alifa Ahmed, who retained her father's Kaliganj Assembly seat, winning by a margin of 50,049 votes over her nearest BJP rival Ashish Ghosh.

The victim, identified as Tamanna Khatun, a Class 4 student, sustained fatal injuries in the blasts and later succumbed to them, according to a senior police officer.

"The girl's body has been sent for post-mortem. We are probing into the cause of the explosion," the police officer said.
