BANDHANI: THE ANCIENT ART OF TYING TRADITIONS IN VIBRANT DOTS
The Daily Guardian
|October 11, 2025
Bandhani, also known as Bandhej or Tie-and-Dye, is one of the oldest and most treasured textile art forms of India. Recognized for its intricate dot patterns and vibrant color combinations, Bandhani reflects a rich cultural heritage that dates back thousands of years.
Worn during festive occasions, weddings, and religious ceremonies, Bandhani is more than just a fabric—it's a symbol of tradition, identity, and craftsmanship. This centuries-old art form continues to captivate the world with its timeless beauty and intricate detailing.
THE ORIGINS OF BANDHANI
The word Bandhani is derived from the Sanskrit word bandh, which means “to tie.” This is fitting, as the art of Bandhani involves tying tiny portions of fabric with thread before dyeing it. The earliest evidence of Bandhani dates back to around 4000 BCE. Paintings in the Ajanta caves depict women wearing dotted, tie-dyed fabrics resembling Bandhani. Historical records show that Bandhani was practiced in regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan even during the Indus Valley Civilization.
It was believed to be a symbol of good luck and prosperity. In traditional Hindu culture, it’s common for a bride to wear red Bandhani during her wedding, as it represents auspiciousness and marital bliss.
WHERE BANDHANI THRIVES
Bandhani is primarily practiced in the western Indian states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of Madhya Pradesh. Each region has developed its own style, motifs, and color combinations:
• Rajasthan: Cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Udaipur are renowned for producing Bandhani sarees, odhnis, and turbans. The colors used are often rich reds, maroons, and yellows.
• Gujarat: In places like Jamnagar, Bhuj, and Mandvi, Bandhani is deeply embedded in local culture. The designs here are often more intricate and come in a wide variety of patterns and colors.
• Madhya Pradesh: Though not as well-known as Rajasthan or Gujarat, parts of Madhya Pradesh also produce beautiful Bandhani work, especially for local consumption.
THE TECHNIQUE: ART IN EVERY KNOT
Creating a Bandhani fabric is a highly skilled, labor intensive process involving the following steps:
