>> Chef Adam Handling has announced that his restaurant Ugly Butterfly at the Carbis Bay Hotel will close at the end of June

- by OLIVIER VERGNAULT

JUST after announcing the closure of one of his Cornish restaurants, chef Adam Handling has revealed plans to open an even better one.

Ugly Butterfly opened at the Carbis Bay Hotel in 2021 and served food at that year’s G7 summit, when the heads of state of countries including the USA, France, Japan and Germany descended on Cornwall.

The first Ugly Butterfly, in London, has a Michelin star and two years ago the Cornish version was voted one of the best restaurants in the UK by the magazine Condé Nast Traveller.

However, last week Mr Handling announced that its time at the Carbis Bay Hotel had come to an end and Ugly Butterfly would close at the end of this month.

Its new incarnation is scheduled to open at the clifftop Headland Hotel in Newquay less than two weeks later.

Mr Handling told The Cornishman’s sister website CornwallLive he had effectively been kicked out of the Carbis Bay Hotel for no reason, when its owners activated a break clause in the contract.

A spokeswoman for the Carbis Bay Hotel declined to comment on the allegation that he had been “kicked out”.
