I love the notion of travelling home for Christmas: I love the anticipation, the warm welcome, everything and everyone a-sparkle and filled with good intentions.
However, on Tuesday my son and his wife were driving from Cape Town to Benoni for Christmas and all I could think of was South Africa's notorious road death rate.
In 2023, there were 10 180 fatal crashes on South African roads leading to 11 883 deaths. By the first of December this year, 10 154 people had already died in traffic accidents.
Last Christmas season, 1 552 people died on SA roads. This year looks set to surpass that.
It's hardly the stuff of a Chris Rea song, is it?
