DISASTER: BID TO STRENGTHEN RESPONSE AS DROUGHT, FIRES INTENSIFY » Warning that below-normal rainfall will continue.
Western Cape premier Alan Winde yesterday warned of mounting crises as critical water shortages and an unusually intense fire season grip the province.
The provincial government is now seeking disaster classification to bolster emergency response as forecasts point to continued below-normal rainfall and persistent fire danger.
The province experienced below-normal rainfall throughout last year, with particularly dry conditions from May onwards.
Lebogang Makgati from the South African Weather Service confirmed that “2025 received below-normal rainfall conditions for the province of the Western Cape”.
She revealed that forecasts indicate these conditions will persist into the coming months.
According to Makgati, below-normal rainfall is anticipated to continue through early winter, particularly affecting the southwestern parts of the province and extending to the southern coastal regions.
