BYD may be a relatively new player in South Africa, but the Chinese automaker is quickly making its presence felt in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) space.

Following the success of its Dolphin Surf Electric Vehicle (EV), BYD has now introduced the Sealion 5 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), a model aimed squarely at families who want advanced technology without the premium price tag.

BYD managing director Steve Chang describes the Sealion 5 as a deliberate move to redefine value in the SUV market.

With a starting price of R499 900 for the Comfort derivative and R569 900 for the Dynamic, it becomes the most affordable PHEV currently available in South Africa.

While the Dolphin Surf remains the cheapest EV, the Sealion 5 now offers buyers a hybrid option that balances efficiency, practicality, and affordability.
